Sharing Patient Confidential Data - Your Choice

The NHS in England is setting up a new system called care.data which will take data from your GP record such as your NHS number and date of birth (but not your name) and link this with data from other care settings such as hospitals. The aim is to improve understanding, locally and nationally, of the most important health needs and to study the quality of care provided.

How your information is used and shared is controlled by law and strict rules are in place to protect your privacy.

As you have a choice to make please take time to read this leaflet.

Also available is a list of Frequently Asked Questions.

If you are happy for your information to be shared you do not need to do anything. If you are not happy for your information to be shared please speak to a receptionist. The first extraction of GP data is due to take place after the next 8 weeks. UPDATE: This programme has been put on hold until further notice.

Views Needed on Improving Access to Health Services for Anxiety and Depression

Dr Ruth Evans

North Tyneside’s new clinical commissioning group is seeking the views of local people on how it can better support people with common mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.

As the new commissioners of healthcare and health services for local people, NHS North Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is looking at how to improve access to talking therapies (psychology, counselling, and group work), which support people who experience mental health issues such as anxiety disorders or depression as an alternative to taking medication or sometimes together with medical treatment.

Dr Ruth Evans, NHS North Tyneside CCG’s clinical director for mental health said local people had benefited from a North Tyneside  talking therapies service since 2009 which is provided by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust - and the CCG was now looking to make some changes in the way the service is offered to patients.

Dr Evans said: “This is a really important service for local people – we know that more people are experiencing mental health issues as part of the impact the economic climate has on them personally and so we are seeking the views of local people on how we can make improvements to the current service model and we would like as many people as possible to respond to our survey."

Dr Evan’s continued: “We’ve decided to make some changes after receiving comments about the service from local GPs and members of the public. In particular, about the need to provide faster access to it and also to make access as easy as possible for people who need to use the service.

I’d encourage anyone who has had experiences of low level mental health issues such as anxiety and depression to spare five minutes of their time to tell us what is important to them and so we can develop a new service specification that reflects the issues that patients feel strongly about.

Local people can find a link to the survey on the CCG’s website: www.northtynesideccg.nhs.uk

Alternatively a paper copy can be requested by telephoning: 0191 217 2758.

This will include a stamped addressed envelope to allow the survey’s easy return.

All responses are confidential and will only be used to inform how local services can be improved which will form the basis for a new service to be procured for North Tyneside. Because the CCG is making some changes to the service it means that under procurement rules it must go out to tender, giving the existing provider and new providers the opportunity to apply for the contract.

NHS North Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group is the new statutory health body, which took over responsibility for planning and commissioning NHS healthcare and health outcomes for local people on April 1, 2013.

NHS North Tyneside CCG is made up of doctors, nurses and other health professionals, supported by experienced health service managers. The borough’s 29 GP practices are members of the CCG, working with a range of other healthcare professionals to ensure the right local NHS services are in place to meet the needs of North Tyneside’s 206,798 population.

New Appointments System Goes Live

Appointments Diary

As of the 12th of May our appointments system has changed. Our new appointments system has been redesigned in order to offer you greater access to your preferred GP when you need it. To make an appointment please ring in or use our online booking system and try and make an appointment with a doctor of your choice for that same day. If that doctor doesn't have any appointments left you should be able to book with another doctor. You can also "pre-book" with a doctor of your choice for a date and time of your choice if that is more convenient.

New Appointments System Summary:

Same day appointments

Everyday at 8am we release a certain number of appointments for that day. If you want one of these appointments we advise you ring in or visit our online booking website at 8am that day.

Pre-bookable appointments

If you don't want a same day appointment you can ring in or go online and book an appointment for a date and time of your choice.

Special Note

On Mondays we are only offering same day appointments. Basically this means you won't be able pre book a Monday appointment.

Don't forget NHS Direct

NHS Direct

For a range of advice on many non urgent health problems please visit the NHS Direct website. We think this is a great resource for all patients including a section on common health questions, a self-help guide, a health encylopaedia and much more.

If you would like to let us know what you think of these changes, good or bad, then please either pop a comment into the comments box in reception or use our comments page.

New Locum

We are delighted to welcome a new locum into our practice. Dr Susan Clasper has joined our practice and will be seeing patients on a Wednesday Morning.

Portugal Place Paint Pot

If you have been into the practice recently you may have noticed a few subtle changes. Walls have been repainted, as has the area behind the reception desk. In addition to this, new carpets and lighting have been installed throughout the practice to create a welcoming atmosphere. Not all work has been completed as we can only do this work when the practice is closed. We hope to have it completed by the end of June.

    Practice Survey Feedback 06/07

Our practice survey was carried out in November 2006. Thank you to everyone who completed this for us. These are the different areas identified by patients who took part in the survey:

    Telephone System

We will be installing a new up to date telephone system in April of this year. We have decided NOT to use the automated facility as we feel all calls should be answered by a person. We will be removing the switchboard element, so the person who answers your call will deal with your request eliminating the need for your call to be transferred to someone else. This will speed up call answering and patients will get a seamless response from one person.

We currently offer appointments at most times throughout the day and have early sessions from 8.00am and late sessions to 6.50pm, 3 nights per week. This is to try to offer alternatives for patients who work. We plan to offer more appointments after 5pm each day.

Emergency appointments are available every day for people who need to be seen the same day. We also offer urgent appointments the next working day and if patients wish to be seen within 2 working days we have that facility as well. However, patients should note that this does not mean that you will get the appointment with the doctor of your choice. If you insist on seeing a particular doctor then you may have to wait longer. We limit pre-booking appointments to 2 weeks ahead because we know from experience that this lessens DNA rates.

From June 2007, we will be running a minor ailments/minor injury service at PPHC and are currently training our team of nurses. In line with this we will be starting to offer longer GP appointments, which we hope will mean that surgeries will run on time and patients will have to wait less time for their appointment slot.

    General State of Building

We intend to completely clean and refurbish the waiting areas, reception and corridors of the building in April/May 2007. This is planned work following on from the refurbishment of the clinical rooms last year.

    Difficulties with Access

We are looking at installing automatic doors at the main entrance. However, depending on costs, we may not be able to arrange this until 2008.

Your comments on any of the above would be most welcome. Please use the comments page if you wish to feedback to us. Thank you
